New Smile

Tigergirl has had 2 loose front teeth for the past 2 or 3 weeks and I was a tad concerned because the adult teeth were coming in way behind them. Today we had a dentist appointment and the dentist said it would be a good idea to pull the loose teeth so that the adult teeth would have more room to come in and straighten out. Tigergirl protested at first until I told her she would probably get a double rate from the Tooth Fairy! I was really proud of her actually as the second "wiggly" tooth wasn`t very wiggly and I`m sure it hurt a bit.

You can see how far back the adult teeth are here:

What`s the going rate for teeth anyway? When I lost my baby teeth, I think I got around 50 cents per tooth so with inflation I`m guessing it`s closer to 500 yen ($5)? What do you all think?

No idea about the going rate. But recalled when my son lost his first tooth about 24 years ago. I told him to hide it under his pillow and it would turn into money. He started crying and said, he no longer had it since Obaachan told him to throw it up on the roof! I guess the lower teeth are to be thrown on the roof and the upper teeth thrown under the house for good luck! Anyway I gave him some money anyway! viki in chiba

DD#1 earned 500 yen for each cavity free tooth. 250 will be the rate for any with cavities (so far none, but she just had two baby back teeth with small cavities, so when those come out. . . )

Now, will Tigergirl start to poke food out the hole to amuse the whole family during meal times? DD#1 adored doing that. . .

Another milestone!!! It is funny because I got 50p when I lost my teeth and I remember being very indignant when my brother got 1 pound when he lost his. It upset me greatly that his teeth were worth more than mine! LOL!

Hi Viki! Too funny about your son. I have been warning my dd that people around her might not understand about the "Tooth Fairy" because we have different customs. I also let her choose ie. throw the tooth over the roof or put it under your pillow for cash. She went for the cash, of course! :)

CGG, Good idea about the cavity vs. cavity-free teeth. My dd has really weak teeth and we have to be super vigilant about brushing or she gets cavities.

Midori, I`ll definately keep it the same for both kids!

Jan, I think my older sisters got a quarter too. I compromised and told Tigergirl that the first tooth (or teeth in her case) are worth more and so be prepared for less money for the others!

Medea, she was so strong. She said it hurt but she was "gamaning" (nice mix of Japanese and English, no?!).

First of all Happy Easter Tigermama! : )

So cute, Tigergirl finally lost her tooth! I agree with your dentist about pulling it to give Tigergirl the room to let her permanent teeth to grow in properly!

As for how much? I did same as you Tigermama. I gave more since they were Branden's first teeth. So I gave 1000 yen per tooth. But I might end up giving my kids just 500 yen per tooth. We'll see!

I liked CGG's idea of paying more for perfect teeth and less for cavity teeth (teeth with cavities). B has no cavities. So knock on wood about that. : )

We both have kids with missing teeth right now Tigermama! Ha ha ha! They are growing up right before our eyes...sniff sniff!

Please tell K, I said, she looks cute cute cute with her missing tooth! : )

Gina, yes they are growing up so fast. I was totally unprepared for this "tooth" thing. I thought kids lost teeth at 6 or 7, not five! Ah well, not much we can do about it except enjoy it!

Lily, A "dishes" fairy sounds great. How about a "laundry" fairy and a "cooking dinner" fairy too...those are two things I seem to be doing CONSTANTLY! :)

    On America's funniest home videos:

A little girl tells her Mom that she's going fool the tooth fairy and put a rolled up piece of paper under her pillow instead of her real tooth. Well, she woke up mad to find out that the tooth fairy had left a violation ticket under her pillow stating:
This is not a real tooth! $5 fine for trying to fool the tooth fairy!!

    ahahahahahahahahaah
